Music Monday – Third Eye Blind

What? Third Eye Blind? Isn’t that a band from the 90’s? Yes, it is. What of it? It’s a band from the 90’s that released one perfect album. And I know Music Monday is usually new music, but you’re going to have to suck it up, because Third Eye Blind (or threeb, as I call them when I’m composing imaginary album reviews for their self titled debut (’97)) was momentarily awesome.

I don’t mean that, to paraphrase Eddie Izzard, in the way we use the word “Awesome” today. Not “awesome” like a mini-corndog, not “awesome” like a Swiffer. I mean,

  1. Extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.
  2. Extremely good; excellent.
While No Doubt’s seminal “Tragic Kingdom” (haha, I’ve been wanting to write that sentence fragment for years) will ever hold the honor of being the first album that I bought with my own money, Third Eye Blind’s self titled album is the first music that connected exactly with my experience as a teenager. It spoke to the highs and lows of life, to strife and love and boredom. It connected to my soul in ways that few albums have since. Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue”, The White Stripe’s “White Blood Cells”, and The John Mayer Trio’s “Try!” have all come close, and I return to them year after year, but never as often as I go back to Third Eye Blind.
It was never a particularly important album, but it was of incredible personal importance to me. And since it came out 15 years ago yesterday, I thought I’d write this post, and share it. Third eye blind taught me to love music, and taught me that other people felt turmoil, too. When I return to it, I remember myself throughout my teenage years, and I see the parts of that boy that still live in this man.
